January is the coldest, quietest month at Niagara, and the one thing that gives it a real reason on the calendar is the Niagara Icewine Festival, running 8 January 2027 to 30 January 2027.

Everything else about the month is a continuation of December without the crowds: same attractions open, same ones shut, colder air, fewer people at the railing.

What’s open, what’s shut

  • Journey Behind the Falls, open. Year round, $33 CAD adult, the one big-ticket falls experience that runs all winter.
  • Butterfly Conservatory, open. Year round, and a genuinely welcome twenty minutes in January.
  • White Water Walk, Whirlpool Aero Car, closed for the season.
  • Maid of the Mist and Whirlpool Jet Boat (US side), closed through winter.

The lights are still running, for the first ten days

The Winter Festival of Lights runs through 10 January 2027, so the first third of January still gets the full display through Queen Victoria Park, Dufferin Islands and Clifton Hill. After that date, the falls are still lit nightly in colour, year round, festival or not, you just lose the extra displays.

The Niagara Icewine Festival

The Niagara Icewine Festival returns 8 January 2027 to 30 January 2027, per niagarawinefestival.com. It is the closest thing January has to a signature event, celebrating the icewine harvest that happens on the vine in the deep cold of the season.

Individual event dates, the opening gala, specific tasting weekends, have not been announced yet. Confirm the current schedule at niagarawinefestival.com before building a trip around a specific event within the window rather than the window itself.

What about the ice?

January is one of the two best-odds months for the ice-covered gorge everyone wants to photograph, but odds are not a promise. The full sourced history of every recorded freeze event, and why nobody should trust a confident “X times it has frozen” count, is in does Niagara Falls freeze?. Check the live cam before you travel; conditions change hour to hour.

Cold, quiet, and one real reason to come: the Icewine Festival

Private SUV from Toronto, hotel or Airbnb pickup anywhere in the GTA, licensed guide. $650 flat for up to 5, about $130 each.

Should you come in January?

Come for the Icewine Festival, for the ice, or for the emptiest railing at Table Rock all year. Come prepared for real cold and build in slack for a squall day on the QEW. Do not come expecting the boat, the Aero Car or the White Water Walk, none of them run again until spring.

Neighbouring months: December still has the full light festival and the holiday crowds; February is colder still and the best odds yet for ice. A month-by-month table for the whole season is in is Niagara Falls worth visiting in winter?. Prices checked September 2026.
