February is the coldest month at Niagara, and precisely because of that, the best month of the year for the ice-covered gorge photograph everyone is chasing.

There is no light festival left running and no boat back yet, this is the leanest month for programmed events. What it has instead is cold, quiet, and the best chance all year of seeing the rocks, railings and trees around the falls glazed in ice.

What’s open, what’s shut

  • Journey Behind the Falls, open. Year round, $33 CAD adult.
  • Butterfly Conservatory, open. Year round, and the best excuse to warm up mid-visit.
  • White Water Walk, Whirlpool Aero Car, closed for the season.
  • Maid of the Mist and Whirlpool Jet Boat (US side), closed through winter.

Why the ice shows up here specifically

The falls themselves basically can’t fully freeze, the water volume is too great even at winter’s legal minimum. What builds up is mist off the falls, freezing onto everything the spray touches, the rocks, the railings, the trees along the gorge. February’s sustained cold gives that mechanism the longest run of the year to work with. The full mechanism, plus every documented event since 1848, is in does Niagara Falls freeze?.

Family Day

Ontario’s Family Day long weekend falls in February, and it is the one weekend of the month with a genuine bump in local visitors. Nothing specific is programmed at the falls for it beyond what already runs year round, but expect the Table Rock promenade and Clifton Hill to be busier than a typical February weekday.

Should you come in February?

Come if the ice-covered gorge is the actual point of the trip, February gives you the best odds of the year. Come prepared for real cold, build slack into a winter highway drive, and check the live cam before you commit to a date. Do not come expecting the boat, the Aero Car or the White Water Walk.

Neighbouring months: January still has the tail of the light festival and the Icewine Festival; March is the seasonal hinge where winter rules start to loosen. A month-by-month table for the whole season is in is Niagara Falls worth visiting in winter?.

Frequently asked questions

What is the weather like at Niagara Falls in February?

January and February are the coldest months here, with daytime highs typically around minus four to minus one Celsius and overnight lows well below that. The mist off the falls makes it feel colder still on the promenade.

Is Niagara Falls open in February?

Yes. Journey Behind the Falls and the Butterfly Conservatory run all month. The boat, the Aero Car and the White Water Walk are shut for the season, same as January and March.

Is February the best month for ice photos?

It has the best odds of any month, going by the recorded history of freeze events, but odds are not a guarantee. Check the live cam before you build a trip around it.

Does the Niagara Icewine Festival run into February?

Not on the dates published so far. The festival's confirmed window is 8 January 2027 to 30 January 2027 only, so it is entirely a January event. Individual event dates haven't been announced yet; check niagarawinefestival.com before you book.

Is February worth visiting?

If ice is the point, yes, it’s the best month for it. If you want a full attraction list or a light festival, no, the Winter Festival of Lights has already ended by 10 January and the boat won’t be back until spring.
