Niagara Falls in March

The seasonal hinge. Winter rules still apply, spring hasn’t arrived, and the boom that keeps the falls from icing over comes out for the season.

March is Niagara’s seasonal hinge: still winter rules on the ground, spring attractions still shut, but the calendar event that marks the season’s turn, the ice boom coming out, happens right around now.

It is also, quietly, the last genuinely calm month before the falls start filling back up for spring.

What’s still shut

This is the thing March visitors get wrong most often: they assume spring attractions are back because the calendar says March. They are not.

  • White Water Walk, closed. Reopens in April, not March.
  • Whirlpool Aero Car, closed. Same, April onward.
  • Journey Behind the Falls and the Butterfly Conservatory, open. Year round, unaffected by the season change.
  • Maid of the Mist and Whirlpool Jet Boat (US side), closed through winter, same as January and February.

The ice boom removal

The 2.7 km ice boom at the Lake Erie outlet, in place every winter since 1964, typically comes out around 1 April, or once eastern Lake Erie ice coverage drops below roughly 650 sq km (250 sq mi), whichever condition is met first. It is a conditions-based removal, not a fixed calendar date.

The 2025 to 2026 season is a useful example of how much that date can move: removal was originally planned for 6 April 2026, then actually delayed to 23 April 2026, because of thick ice around the boom and late-season weather. Treat that as an example from one past season, not a prediction for this one.

Should you come in March?

Come if you want the falls on winter rates, without the summer crowds, and with a real chance of the ice-covered gorge still holding, going by the recorded freeze history. Do not come expecting the boat, the Aero Car or the White Water Walk, none of them are back yet.

Neighbouring months: February has the best odds of the year for ice. April is when the spring attractions return, and the best time to visit covers the whole year. A month-by-month table for the winter is in is Niagara Falls worth visiting in winter?.

Frequently asked questions

What is the weather like at Niagara Falls in March?

Still winter. January and February are the coldest months, and March is the tail of that pattern: cold at the start, only beginning to soften by the end, with real day-to-day swings.

Is Niagara Falls open in March?

Yes, on the same terms as the rest of winter. Journey Behind the Falls and the Butterfly Conservatory run all month. The White Water Walk and Whirlpool Aero Car reopen in April, not March, so they are still shut for the whole month.

When does the ice boom come out?

Typically around 1 April, or once eastern Lake Erie ice coverage drops below about 650 sq km (250 sq mi), whichever governs. In the 2025 to 2026 season it was delayed to 23 April, from a planned 6 April, because of thick ice and late-season weather. Treat any specific date as an example from a past season, not a promise for the current one.

Is March a good time to visit?

If you want the falls quiet, on winter rates, and possibly still ice-covered, yes, March is the last month all of that holds. If you want the boat, the Aero Car or the White Water Walk running, no, spring hasn’t started yet.

What changes in April?

The White Water Walk and Whirlpool Aero Car typically reopen and the ice boom typically comes out, though both dates move with conditions rather than the calendar.
