Niagara Falls in April
April is Niagara Falls’ shoulder month: cool and changeable weather, the ice boom coming out, the White Water Walk and Whirlpool Aero Car reopening, and crowds that are still light. It is a good month for the falls themselves and a so-so one for everything else. Bring a proper jacket, expect a few damp days, and do not count on the boat or the fireworks.
April at a glance
The weather, honestly
April is the month that most often disappoints people who expect spring. Climate sources do not agree to the degree, but they cluster around daytime highs of about 9 to 12°C and lows near 3°C. That sounds mild on paper. At the railing it is not, because the wind off the gorge and the mist from the falls make it feel colder than the thermometer says.
Mornings can be near freezing and a clear afternoon can be genuinely pleasant. A sunny, still day in April is one of the best days of the year to stand at the brink. A grey, windy one is a short visit. Check the forecast the evening before, and decide on the day.
What to wear: a waterproof outer layer, a warm layer under it, and shoes that cope with wet paths. Gloves and a hat are not overkill. Bring a change of socks if you plan on going anywhere near the water.
The ice boom comes out
The ice boom is a 2.7 km barrier across the Lake Erie outlet, in place every winter since 1964, that holds back lake ice before it can flow into the Niagara River. It typically comes out around 1 April, or once eastern Lake Erie ice coverage falls below roughly 650 sq km (250 sq mi). It is a conditions call, not a calendar date.
The most recent season is a useful example of how far it can slide. Removal was planned for 6 April 2026 and was delayed to 23 April 2026 because of thick ice and late-season weather. Treat that as one past season. If the boom date matters to your plans, check the operators close to your travel date rather than relying on an article, including this one. Our March guide covers the removal in more detail.

What reopens, and what stays uncertain
This is where April is easy to get wrong, because a seasonal attraction opening “in April” can mean the first day or the last. The list below separates what is solid from what is not. Attraction details were checked at the operators’ own sites in September 2026.
- Journey Behind the Falls: open. It runs year round, so April is no different from February. We can add it to your tour for $40 adult · $25 child. Hours checked September 2026.
- Butterfly Conservatory: open. Also year round, and a handy warm fallback on a cold, wet April afternoon.
- White Water Walk: reopens for the season. Niagara Parks lists it as seasonal, April to November, and does not publish an exact opening day on the page we checked. It is a ticketed attraction, and the lift takes you about 70 metres down to a boardwalk beside the rapids.
- Whirlpool Aero Car: reopens for the season. Same April to November window, same caveat on the exact day. It is a ticketed attraction and an open cable car, so wind can pause it.
- Boat cruise: check first. Start dates follow ice and weather, and we cannot confirm one for April. Look at the operator’s site in the week you travel before you plan around it.
- US-side boats: not guaranteed. The Maid of the Mist and the Whirlpool Jet Boat are closed in winter, and their spring start depends on the operators, so confirm directly.
Attraction details were checked September 2026 and opening dates may change when the season starts, so confirm them at niagaraparks.com before you go.
No fireworks, no light festival
The Winter Festival of Lights is over by April, and the nightly fireworks are a summer feature. In 2026 the series ran from 15 May to 12 October. We have not seen 2027 dates published, so we cannot tell you when it will start. Do not plan an April evening around either. What you will have is the standard nightly illumination of the falls, and a promenade with far fewer people on it.
Easter and crowds
Easter weekend is the one reliably busier stretch in the month. It also moves, which catches people out. Easter Sunday fell on 5 April in 2026, but in 2027 it falls on 28 March, so the 2027 Easter long weekend lands in March, not April. If you are planning a spring trip, check where Easter sits in your year before you assume it is your busy weekend.
Outside Easter, April is quiet. Mid-week mornings are close to empty at the viewpoints, restaurants have tables, and parking is no trouble, in a way that July never offers.
Should you come in April?
Come in April if the falls are the point, you like quiet, and you can pick a decent day. The spring melt keeps the river full, the viewpoints are free of crowds, and you get the first of the seasonal attractions without the queue.
Wait for May if you want warmth. Our May guide describes highs of 18 to 21°C, nightly fireworks and every attraction running. Come in March if what you want is the last of the winter quiet. April sits between the two: easier to plan than May and softer than March, and not warm enough to forget your jacket.
Getting there from Toronto in April
It is about 130 km, roughly 90 minutes on a clear road. Add 20-30 minutes during Toronto rush hour (roughly 7-9am and 4-6pm). April weather can be changeable on the QEW, with rain or the odd late cold snap, so leave a little extra time and check conditions the morning you go.
Our private tour is $650 flat for the vehicle, up to 5 people, with GTA hotel pickup and a licensed guide who adjusts the day to the weather. In April that matters: indoor stops go first on a cold, wet afternoon, and the outdoor ones go first when the sun is out. Details are on the private Niagara Falls tour page.
What a good April day looks like
Start at the falls in the morning while the light is soft and the promenade is empty. Walk it from Table Rock toward the Rainbow Bridge with a hot drink, then decide based on the weather. If it is clear and still, go outside: the White Water Walk or the Aero Car, if they have opened for the season. If it is grey and windy, go behind the falls through Journey Behind the Falls, which is partly sheltered, or warm up in the Butterfly Conservatory.
Keep the afternoon loose. April weather can turn in an hour, and the best plan is one that has an indoor fallback in it. Finish with a late lunch somewhere warm rather than pushing through, and head home before the evening cold sets in.
Photographing the falls in April
The mist from the falls is good for atmosphere and hard on lenses, so carry a cloth. Overcast skies are flattering to the water and easy on contrast, while bright sun on a cold day can throw rainbows in the spray. There is no foliage yet, so the backdrop is bare and grey-brown rather than green, which suits a moody picture better than a postcard one.
FAQ
Is April a good time to visit Niagara Falls?
It is a good time if you want the falls without the crowds and do not mind cool weather. The falls run at full force with spring melt, the ice boom comes out, and the White Water Walk and Whirlpool Aero Car reopen. It is a poor time if you want warm weather, the boat running on a fixed schedule, or the nightly fireworks.
What is the weather like at Niagara Falls in April?
Cool and changeable. Most climate sources put April daytime highs somewhere between roughly 9 and 12°C, with lows around 3°C, though the exact figures vary a little from one source to the next. Expect wind and mist at the brink, and the odd cold, wet day.
What is open at Niagara Falls in April?
Journey Behind the Falls and the Butterfly Conservatory are open year round. The White Water Walk and Whirlpool Aero Car run seasonally from April, though the operator does not publish an exact day on the pages we checked. Boat cruise start dates depend on ice and weather, so check the operator before you travel.
When does the ice boom come out?
Typically around 1 April, or once eastern Lake Erie ice coverage falls below roughly 650 sq km (250 sq mi), whichever the operators use that year. In the 2025 to 2026 season it was planned for 6 April and then delayed to 23 April because of thick ice and late-season weather. That is one past season, not a promise.
Are the Niagara Falls fireworks on in April?
No. In 2026 the nightly series ran from 15 May to 12 October. We have not seen 2027 dates published, so do not plan an April trip around fireworks.
Is Easter busy at Niagara Falls?
Easter long weekends are busier than a normal April weekend. Easter moves each year: it fell on 5 April in 2026 but falls on 28 March in 2027, so the 2027 Easter long weekend is in March rather than April. Check the calendar for your year.
