Niagara Falls in December
The best winter month here, and the one week almost everybody books wrong.
December has one structural advantage over every other month at Niagara, and it is the thing nobody puts in the headline: it gets dark at half past four.
In July, seeing the falls lit means waiting around until ten at night, which for a day trip from Toronto means getting home close to midnight. In December the illumination and the entire Winter Festival of Lights are running before dinner. You can drive down in the morning, do the falls in daylight, see them lit, and be back in the city by eight.
That is a genuinely better day out, and it costs about half of what July costs.
The week to avoid
December is not one month, it is two. Understand this and everything else falls into place.

Almost every December booking problem we see comes from the same place: people take the week between Christmas and New Year because that is when they are off work, and then arrive expecting December-quiet. It is the one stretch of winter that feels like August.
What actually closes on 25 December
This catches people out, so it is worth being precise. On Christmas Day the falls are still there, the Niagara Parkway is open, and the Winter Festival of Lights is still lit, none of that is ticketed, gated or staffed.
What closes is the Niagara Parks attractions that otherwise operate year round, including Journey Behind the Falls, along with most restaurants and shops. So a Christmas Day visit is a walk along a beautifully lit river with nowhere to eat and nothing to go inside. Some people want exactly that. Just do it on purpose rather than by accident.

The Winter Festival of Lights
Running 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, free, and the main event of a December visit. Millions of lights through Queen Victoria Park, up Clifton Hill and around Dufferin Islands.
The part most day-trippers miss is Dufferin Islands. Everybody does the Queen Victoria Park stretch because it is next to the falls, and then leaves. The Islands are a short drive upriver, the displays are denser, and you can walk it in near-silence while the main park is shoulder to shoulder. Go there second, not first.

What’s open in December
- Journey Behind the Falls, open, year round, $33 CAD adult. Closed 25 December only.
- Butterfly Conservatory, open, year round. The warm room when the mist has got to you.
- Niagara Parks Power Station, open, and its after-dark show is a good December pairing with the lights.
- White Water Walk, Whirlpool Aero Car, closed for the season.
- The boat, check. May run early in the month; the operator sets the last sailing on conditions and does not publish it in advance.

Niagara-on-the-Lake in December
Twenty minutes from the falls and the strongest supporting act of the month. The Old Town does Christmas properly, lit main street, a candlelight stroll, shops that are actually independent, and the wineries stay open through winter with nobody in them.
For a day trip out of Toronto, the combination that works best in December is falls in the afternoon, Niagara-on-the-Lake at dusk, lights on the way back. It reads as three stops and it is really one loop.
Getting there in December
The QEW is a lake-effect snow corridor and the stretch through Grimsby and Beamsville catches squalls the rest of the route does not. A clear sky in Toronto tells you very little about the road at Stoney Creek. Leave margin, check the Ontario 511 map rather than a weather app, and do not plan a tight return.
The other December-specific thing: it is dark on the way home. The Parkway is unlit in stretches and the deer are active. That is fine if you know the road and tiring if you do not, after a full day out in the cold.
The verdict
December is the winter month to pick. Early-evening illumination, a free festival running the length of the Parkway, Christmas in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and rates well under summer. You give up the boat and two attractions.

What is the weather like at Niagara Falls in December?
Daytime highs sit around 1–4°C early in the month and hover near or just below freezing by the end, with overnight lows of about −5°C. Snow is likely but rarely deep before January. The constant mist off the falls is what makes it feel colder than the number, a waterproof outer layer matters more than a thick one.
Is Niagara Falls open on Christmas Day?
The falls themselves, the Niagara Parkway and the Winter Festival of Lights are all there on 25 December, none of it is ticketed or gated. Sometimes, early in the month, and the operator does not publish a fixed final sailing date, it is called on ice and weather each year. How busy is Niagara Falls in December?
Quiet for the first two weeks, then it climbs steeply. The stretch from roughly 26 December to 2 January is the busiest winter period of the year, school holidays across Ontario and New York State, plus the New Year’s Eve concert. If you have a choice of dates, the first fortnight of December is a far better trip.
