Winter Day Trips from Toronto, 2026 to 27
Half the usual list is shut from November. Here is what is open, what is worth the winter drive, and where we could not confirm something, so you can check it first.

Published October 31, 2026 · 8 min read
A July list of day trips is a bad guide in January. The Elora Gorge conservation area lists a May to October season, the Stratford Festival season ends on 1 November, and the Toronto Island ferry runs to one island, not three.
We drive the Niagara route every week and watch the gates close. For everything else we went to the operator, the city or the tourism body, and where none of them publishes an answer we say so. Every row below carries a check date and where it came from.
Last checked October 2026. Winter hours and opening dates move with weather and staffing. If a trip is more than a few weeks away, use the operator link before you drive.
The eight trips, side by side
| Trip | From Toronto | Open November to March | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Niagara FallsOpen | About 90 min | Falls lit nightly; Journey Behind the Falls and the Butterfly Conservatory run year round; Winter Festival of Lights 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027 | First-timers, couples, families, anyone who wants ice and lights in one evening |
| Niagara-on-the-LakeCheck first | 90 to 100 min | Town open, many wineries on winter hours; Niagara Icewine Festival 15 January 2027 to 31 January 2027 | Couples, wine lovers, a slow Christmas-lights afternoon |
| Blue Mountain and CollingwoodCheck first | 1 h 45 min to 2 h | Resort announced a 10 December 2026 opening for skiing; the village stays open around it | Skiers, snowboarders, families who want a snow day |
| StratfordCheck first | About 2 h | Stratford Festival season ends 1 November 2026; Lights On Stratford runs 18 December to 10 January, Thursday to Sunday evenings, free | A festive evening in a small heritage town, not theatre |
| Hamilton waterfallsCheck first | 45 to 60 min | The falls run through winter and often ice up; access and parking at the busiest falls is managed | Hikers, photographers, a short trip on a short day |
| Elora Gorge and the villageCheck first | 1 h 15 min to 1 h 30 min | The village is open; the Elora Gorge Conservation Area lists a 1 May to 15 October season | A quiet village afternoon, not a gorge hike |
| Prince Edward CountyCheck first | 2 h 15 min to 2 h 45 min | Some wineries keep winter hours, many weekends only or by appointment; some close for January and February | An overnight, not a day trip |
| Toronto IslandsCheck first | 15 min by ferry | Ferries run year round from the Jack Layton terminal; the winter timetable (14 October to mid-April) serves Ward’s Island only | A skyline walk on a clear cold day, no car needed |
Every row checked October 2026. Drive times are typical without traffic. Operators change winter hours without notice, so the Niagara open-and-closed list and each operator’s own site beat this table if they disagree.
If you want lights: Niagara Falls
The Winter Festival of Lights runs 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. It is free, and the light displays are lit nightly from 5:00 pm to midnight, holidays included. The route is more than 8 km through the Niagara Parkway, the Fallsview district and Lundy’s Lane; the organiser suggests driving Lundy's Lane and through Dufferin Islands, then parking at Table Rock or Clifton Hill to walk. Dufferin Islands takes voluntary donations toward its displays.
Fireworks at 8:00 pm run on Fridays and Saturdays from 14 November to 12 December, nightly from 18 December to 2 January, and Friday 8 and Saturday 9 January, about 5 minutes each, with an extra 9-minute show at midnight on 31 December. There is also a free meet-and-greet at Misty Lodge in Queen Victoria Park, Fridays and Saturdays from 6 to 9 pm. The organiser does not list individual displays by name, so we will not pretend to. Everything in this section was read off their own page in October 2026.
On 25 December, Niagara Parks ran its main attractions on shorter holiday hours last year, so check niagaraparks.com for 2026. The boat cruise has no published last sailing, so check niagaracitycruises.com the week you travel. The full dated list is in what closes at Niagara Falls in winter, and the lights have their own Festival of Lights guide.
The lights, without the drive home in the dark
We time the winter day to arrive for the light, with a private SUV, hotel or Airbnb pickup and a licensed guide. $650 flat for up to 5.

If you want snow: Blue Mountain
The only trip here built around snow rather than despite it. Before opening day there is a village and a ridge, not a ski hill.
Check before you go: We found the 10 December date in a CTV Barrie report dated 14 October 2026; the resort’s own opening-day page still showed last season when we looked. Confirm on bluemountain.ca, and remember openings move with snowmaking weather.
If you want a slow, festive evening: Stratford or Niagara-on-the-Lake
The theatre season is over for the year. The winter draw is Lights On Stratford: free light installations in downtown and along the river, 5 to 10 pm, Thursday to Sunday, from 18 December 2026 to 10 January 2027.
Check before you go: Its free shuttles do not run on 24, 25 or 26 December or on 1 and 2 January. Restaurants often keep reduced winter hours, so book dinner.
Niagara-on-the-Lake is the warmer version of the same idea. Quieter and prettier in snow than in July, and winter is when icewine is the thing to taste. Many wineries cut hours or move to weekends and appointments between November and March. Check before you go: Each winery sets its own winter hours, so check before you drive. The festival publishes only its overall window; gala and weekend event dates were not on its site when we looked. Our Niagara-on-the-Lake Christmas guide and icewine tasting guide cover what to do once you are there.
If you do not want a car: the Toronto Islands, and the Christmas market
Winter sailings run from about 6:30 am to 11:45 pm, with gaps from 15 minutes to over an hour. Ward’s Island is the only landing on the winter timetable, so plan a walk, not a Centre Island day.
Check before you go: The City of Toronto can change sailings for weather or mechanical problems, and its winter page does not list the fare. Check toronto.ca/ferry on the day.
The Distillery Winter Village runs 12 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 in the Distillery Historic District and is ticketed. Its 2026 pricing was not published when we checked, so confirm the price at the source before you book. It runs almost the same weeks as the Niagara festival, which is why we wrote a guide to doing both.
If you only have half a day: the Hamilton waterfalls
Webster’s and Tew’s Falls ice up in a hard cold snap and the gorge paths are quiet. It is half a day, not a full one.
Check before you go: Tourism Hamilton says on-site parking at Webster’s Falls is by online reservation only from the end of September. Check the Hamilton Conservation Authority for the current fee and any closures, and bring ice cleats: the paths glaze.
Better saved for another season, or turned into an overnight
Elora Gorge. The conservation area, which is what most people mean by Elora Gorge, lists a May to October season. The village of galleries, cafes and restaurants stays open. Check before you go: The Grand River Conservation Authority points to grandriver.ca/activitystatus for real-time hours, and we could not confirm any winter day-use access. Do not drive out to hike the gorge without checking first.
Prince Edward County. Two and a half hours each way in winter conditions is a lot for one day. It earns its place as an overnight, with quiet tasting rooms and no crowds. Check before you go: Winter hours are the least reliable thing in the guides: winery directories list everything from daily to appointment only, and not all are current. Call or check each winery before you go.

Driving in winter, honestly
The temperature is not what catches people out. A squall band can turn a dry QEW into a white-out in twenty minutes, and the drive home after a festival evening is the worst of it: dark, tired and possibly after a glass of wine. Check Ontario 511 before you leave and again before you head back, and be willing to stay the night. Our winter driving guide has the detail. If you would rather not make that call at 10 pm, that is what the private tour is for.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best winter day trips from Toronto?
For lights, Niagara Falls: the Winter Festival of Lights runs 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027 and is free. For snow, Blue Mountain, which announced a 10 December 2026 opening. For a quiet festive evening, Lights On Stratford (18 December to 10 January) or Niagara-on-the-Lake. For no car at all, the Toronto Islands on the winter ferry timetable. Every trip is checked and dated in the table above.
Which Ontario day trips are open from November to March?
Checked October 2026: Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Hamilton waterfalls, Stratford (winter lights only) and the Toronto Islands are open in some form. Blue Mountain opens in December. The Elora Gorge Conservation Area lists a 1 May to 15 October season, and Prince Edward County wineries keep reduced, sometimes appointment-only, hours.
Is the Niagara Winter Festival of Lights free?
Yes. It is free to attend, and Dufferin Islands takes voluntary donations toward its displays. The route runs more than 8 km through the Niagara Parkway, the Fallsview district and Lundy’s Lane, with the displays lit nightly from 5:00 pm to midnight, holidays included. You pay for parking, food and any paid attraction, not for the lights. Dates and route checked October 2026 at the organiser’s own site.
Are there fireworks at Niagara Falls in winter?
During the festival, yes. They run at 8:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays from 14 November to 12 December, nightly from 18 December to 2 January, and Friday 8 and Saturday 9 January, and last about 5 minutes, with an extra 9-minute show at midnight on 31 December. Outside those dates there are no regular fireworks until the summer season.
Is it safe to drive to these places in winter?
Usually, and occasionally not. The risk on the Niagara and Blue Mountain routes is lake-effect and snow-squall bands that arrive with little warning, not the temperature. Check Ontario 511 before you leave and again before you drive home, carry a scraper and a charged phone, and be willing to cancel. Handing the driving to someone else is the other answer.
Do you run tours on any of these winter trips?
We run Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake from Toronto all year in a licensed, insured private SUV with hotel and Airbnb pickup across the GTA. In winter we time the day to arrive for the lights. Pricing is $650 flat for up to 5. The other destinations in this guide you would do in your own vehicle or on transit.
