Visiting Niagara Falls from the US: Border, Customs, What to Bring (2026)

June 9, 2026·7 min read

The Canadian side of Niagara Falls is the side worth seeing — Horseshoe Falls fills the view, the boardwalk is wider, and the night lighting is on this bank. If you're in Buffalo, Rochester, NYC, or driving in from anywhere in the northeast, here's everything you need to know about the crossing in 2026.

Documents you need

  • Adults: Valid US passport (book), passport card, NEXUS card, or enhanced driver's license
  • Kids 16–17: Same as adults
  • Kids under 16: Birth certificate accepted but passport is much faster
  • Permanent residents: Green card + passport from country of citizenship
  • Visitors from outside US/Canada: Passport + Canadian visa or eTA (most western European, Australian, etc. need only an eTA — apply online before travel)

The three bridges (and which to use)

Rainbow Bridge (Niagara Falls)

The famous one — you walk or drive across with a falls view. Pedestrian crossing is $1 USD each way and almost never has a line. Vehicle: $5 USD. Busiest on summer weekends, but a good morning crossing is still 15–30 min.

Peace Bridge (Buffalo / Fort Erie)

About 20 minutes south. Best for road trippers and anyone driving I-90 / QEW. Usually faster than Rainbow Bridge on busy weekends, especially northbound on Saturday mornings.

Queenston-Lewiston Bridge

7 miles north of the falls. Usually quietest of the three. Best for visitors arriving from upstate NY who plan to start the day in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Customs questions you'll be asked

The Canadian Border Services Agency officer will ask 3–5 quick questions. Have these answers ready:

  • Where do you live? (Your home state)
  • Where are you going? (Niagara Falls, Ontario)
  • How long? (A few hours / overnight / however long)
  • Purpose? (Tourism)
  • Bringing anything? (Mostly: no alcohol, no firearms, no cannabis. Snacks and personal items fine.)

Be direct. Don't over-explain. Have everyone's passport visible. The whole exchange takes 60 seconds if you're prepared.

What to bring (and what to leave)

  • Bring: passport, credit card with no foreign-transaction fee, ~$50 CAD cash for parking/tips, light layer for falls mist
  • Bring if you have it: US dollars are widely accepted at tourist spots but rate is often poor — use card
  • Leave at home: firearms, pepper spray, recreational cannabis, large amounts of fresh produce, undeclared cash over $10,000 CAD

The smart-money option: park in the US, tour from Canada

If you're driving from anywhere in the northeast, the cheapest and least stressful play is to park on the American side (Niagara Falls NY lots are $5–10/day vs. $20–30 on the Canadian side), walk the Rainbow Bridge ($1 each way as a pedestrian), and pick up a private tour on the Canadian side. We do pickups from any Canadian-side hotel and can meet you at the bridge.

If you're staying overnight in Toronto and want to skip the border twice, our Toronto airport guide has the layover-day plan that works for international US connections.

FAQ

Do I need a passport to cross from the US into Niagara Falls Canada?

Yes. Adults need a valid passport, NEXUS card, or enhanced driver's license. Kids under 16 can use a birth certificate but a passport makes the crossing faster. No exceptions for tourist day trips.

Is the Canadian side better than the American side?

Yes. About 90% of the falls' best viewpoints (including the panoramic Horseshoe Falls view) are on the Canadian side. The American side has the Cave of the Winds and Goat Island but the famous skyline shots are all from Canada.

How long does the border crossing take?

Off-peak: 10–20 minutes either direction. Peak summer weekends (especially Saturday afternoons): 30–60 minutes northbound, occasionally up to 90 minutes at the Rainbow Bridge. Peace Bridge in Buffalo is usually faster than the Rainbow Bridge.

Is ArriveCAN required in 2026?

No. ArriveCAN is optional in 2026 — only required if you're using the Advance CBSA Declaration to speed up Pearson Airport entry. For land crossings into Niagara Falls, it's not needed.

Can I bring my US rental car into Canada?

Usually yes, but check with your rental company first — some require written permission and a small fee. Insurance must extend to Canada (most major US insurance does, confirm with your provider).

What's the smartest way to do the falls from a US-side hotel?

Park your car on the US side (cheaper) and walk across the Rainbow Bridge — $1 each way as a pedestrian, no line, and you're on the Canadian side in 10 minutes. Then explore on foot or take a tour with Canadian pickup.
