Niagara Falls Day Trip from Toronto — The Complete Guide (2026)

March 15, 2025·8 min read·By Go Tour Niagara

Niagara Falls is 130 kilometres from downtown Toronto. That's about 90 minutes by car — close enough to visit in a day, far enough that the right planning makes all the difference.

Every year, millions of people visit Toronto without ever making the trip to Niagara Falls. It's one of the most common regrets among tourists who come to Ontario. This guide is designed to make sure that doesn't happen to you.

How Far is Niagara Falls from Toronto?

The distance from downtown Toronto to Niagara Falls is approximately 130 km via the QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way). Under normal conditions, that's about 90 minutes. If you're departing during Toronto rush hour (7–9am or 4–6pm), add 20–30 minutes.

Most day trips depart around 8:00–9:30am and return by 6:00–7:00pm — giving you a full, unhurried day.

Your Options for Getting There

Option 1: Private Tour (Recommended)

A private tour is the most convenient and often the best value for groups of 3 or more. We pick you up at your hotel anywhere in the GTA, drive you down with a licensed guide, and bring you back when you're ready. No bus schedules, no shared transfers, no strangers.

Our private tours run $500 flat rate for the whole vehicle (up to 7 people). That's $72 per person in a group of 7 — often cheaper than a bus tour, and exponentially better.

Option 2: Group Bus Tour

Several companies run daily bus tours from Toronto to Niagara Falls. They typically run $89–$149 per person. For a group of 4, that's $356–$596 total — often more expensive than a private tour, with none of the flexibility.

Bus tours are on fixed schedules, make fixed stops, and give you limited time at the falls. If you're a solo traveller, a bus tour is a reasonable option. For any group, private is almost always the better choice.

Option 3: Drive Yourself

If you have a car, driving yourself is totally feasible. Take the QEW west from Toronto, follow signs toward Niagara Falls. Parking in Niagara Falls can be $20–$40/day in summer. Factor that in, plus the stress of driving in tourist traffic.

What to See at Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is actually three falls — Horseshoe Falls (the big one, on the Canadian side), American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. Here's what to prioritize:

  • Horseshoe Falls viewpoints: Table Rock is the closest you can get to Horseshoe Falls on foot. Stand at the railing and feel the spray. It's overwhelming in the best way.
  • Maid of the Mist (~$35/person): The boat that takes you to the base of the falls. You will get soaked. Worth every penny, available May–October.
  • Journey Behind the Falls (~$28–$32/person): Tunnels carved into the rock behind the falls. You hear the thunder from inside.
  • Niagara-on-the-Lake: Ontario's most charming heritage town, 20 minutes north of the falls. Historic main street, wineries, beautiful architecture.
  • Whirlpool Gorge Lookout: Where the Niagara River bends dramatically. One of the most photogenic spots on the whole route — most tourists miss it.
  • Clifton Hill: The entertainment strip near the falls. SkyWheel, restaurants, Ripley's, wax museums. Great for kids and great for an evening.

Day Tour vs Night Tour

Both are excellent — it really comes down to personal preference.

Day tour: You get the full Niagara-on-the-Lake stop, clear views of the falls in daylight, better photos of the mist and water colour, and more time for outdoor activities.

Night tour: Timed to arrive at dusk when the falls illuminate in colour. On Friday and Sunday evenings (May–September), there are fireworks directly over the falls. If you're visiting in summer, the night experience is genuinely magical.
