Victoria Day Long Weekend in Niagara Falls 2026: Plan Now

May 16, 2026·5 min read

Victoria Day weekend (May 16–18, 2026) is when Niagara unofficially opens for the season. Patios, wineries, fireworks, and the first really warm weekend of the year. Here's how to spend the long weekend without getting stuck in QEW traffic or paying peak-summer prices.

Why this weekend is special

Victoria Day is the calendar marker that flips Niagara from "early shoulder season" to "open for the year." The fireworks series started May 15 and runs every night. NOTL wineries finish opening their patios. Restaurants in Niagara Falls and NOTL launch their summer menus. Niagara City Cruise runs at full hourly frequency for the first time. The weather is finally reliably 18–22°C.

It's about 60–70% of peak July crowd levels — busy but workable, and you can still get a same-week reservation at most restaurants.

3-day Victoria Day itinerary

Saturday — Niagara Falls

  • • Morning: Table Rock viewpoint + Niagara City Cruise (10:30 AM sailing)
  • • Afternoon: Journey Behind the Falls + Clifton Hill stroll
  • • Evening: Skylon Tower revolving dinner (8:30 PM) + extended fireworks at 10 PM

Sunday — Niagara-on-the-Lake

  • • Late morning: Drive the Niagara Parkway north (Whirlpool, Floral Clock photo stops)
  • • Lunch: Patio on Queen Street, NOTL
  • • Afternoon: 2 winery tastings (Inniskillin, Trius, Jackson-Triggs, Peller)
  • • Evening: Drive back to NF for fireworks at 10 PM (or stay in NOTL for dinner)

Monday (holiday) — Hidden gems day

  • • Morning: Niagara Glen hike (4 km, 2 hrs, into the gorge)
  • • Lunch: BBQ pits in Queen Victoria Park (BYO meat — locals know)
  • • Afternoon: Whirlpool Aero Car + Floral Showhouse
  • • Drive home before 3 PM to beat QEW traffic, OR stay for one last fireworks display

If you only have one day

Day-trip from Toronto — leave 8 AM, arrive 9:30 AM, do the boat cruise + Skylon dinner + fireworks, drive home at 10:15 PM. Roughly 14 hours door-to-door but you hit the headline experience without paying long-weekend hotel rates.

Hotel + restaurant booking timing

Hotels: Niagara Falls hotels with falls views (Marriott, Sheraton, Embassy) are typically booked 4–6 weeks before Victoria Day. NOTL boutique inns (Prince of Wales, Queen's Landing) book 6–8 weeks before. If you're reading this within 2 weeks of the long weekend, you're mostly looking at last-minute cancellations or chain hotels in Niagara Falls' Lundy's Lane area.

Restaurants: Skylon Tower revolving dining for Saturday/Monday at 8:30 PM books out 2–3 weeks ahead. Most other restaurants take same-week or walk-in. NOTL Queen Street patios are first-come on holiday weekends.

QEW traffic strategy

  • Going (TO → NF): Friday after 5 PM is brutal (1.5–2 hr). Saturday before 8 AM or Sunday after 11 AM is clean (90 min). Skip Saturday 9 AM–noon if possible.
  • Returning (NF → TO): Monday 3–6 PM = worst window of the year. Plan to leave NF before 1 PM Monday OR after 8 PM. Sunday evening returns are usually fine.
  • If you'd rather not drive on the holiday: book a private tour for Saturday or Sunday and let someone else handle the QEW.

FAQ

Is Niagara Falls busy on Victoria Day weekend?

Yes — Victoria Day (May 16–18, 2026) is the unofficial start of patio season in Ontario, so Niagara Falls and NOTL are noticeably busier than the rest of May. That said, it's about 60–70% of peak July crowds, so still very manageable. Hotels in Niagara Falls often book out 4–6 weeks in advance.

Are there fireworks on Victoria Day in Niagara Falls?

Yes — the 2026 fireworks series starts May 15 at 10 PM and runs nightly. Saturday May 16 and Monday May 18 (the holiday) typically get extended displays of 12–15 minutes versus the standard 8.

What's open on Victoria Day Monday in Niagara Falls?

Almost everything. Niagara City Cruise, Journey Behind the Falls, Skylon, Clifton Hill, the Floral Showhouse, all NOTL wineries, and most restaurants run holiday hours. Niagara Parks attractions all open. A few small NOTL boutiques close.

Is the QEW traffic bad on Victoria Day weekend?

Going to Niagara: Friday afternoon and Saturday morning are the worst — leave Toronto by 7 AM Saturday or 9 AM Sunday for a clean run. Coming back: Monday afternoon between 3–6 PM is the worst stretch, with delays of 60–90 minutes possible. Sunday evening returns are usually fine.

Should I book a hotel in Niagara Falls or NOTL for Victoria Day?

Niagara Falls hotels are cheaper and put you walking distance from fireworks. NOTL is quieter and more romantic but adds a 25-minute drive each evening. If both options are sold out (likely 4 weeks before), day-tripping from Toronto with a private tour is the cleanest plan B.
