"Is the Skylon Tower Worth It? Observation Deck vs Revolving Dining vs Free Views." Go Tour Niagara, https://gotourniagara.ca/blog/skylon-tower-worth-it. Last verified October 2026.
The Skylon Tower is worth it if you want the whole panorama of the falls, the river and the city from 775 feet, and it is at its best around dusk when the falls light up. It is not worth paying for if you are expecting a closer or more powerful view than you get free from the ground at Queen Victoria Park.
We drive past it all day, so here is the plain version. Skylon does not publish its admission price on its main site, so this guide does not quote one. Check skylon.com for the current price, hours and combo passes. Facts about the tower below were checked there in October 2026.
What you get up top
The Yellow Bug elevators climb the outside of the tower in 52 seconds. At the top there are indoor and outdoor observation decks with a full 360-degree view, and Skylon says that on a clear day you can see up to 125 km (80 miles). You can take in both falls, the river bending toward the lake, and the city grid behind it, all in one turn.
What the deck does well is scale. At ground level the falls are loud, wet and close. From the tower they become a shape in a landscape, and you finally understand why the river bends where it does and how small the boats look. That perspective is the product.
Observation deck vs revolving dining
- Observation deck only. Good for a short visit, easy to fit between other stops. Go in clear weather.
- Revolving dining room. The room turns 360 degrees every hour, so a normal meal gives you every angle without leaving your table. Skylon says every dining reservation includes the observation decks and the elevator ride, and lists early dinner specials daily at 4:30 and 5:00 pm. That is the sensible way to book it: an early table at dusk covers the decks, the lit-up falls and dinner in one go. Book ahead, and ask for a window table.
- Summit Suite buffet. The casual, family-friendly option, open seasonally, typically May to October.
Dusk at the falls, with no driving home
We plan evening visits from Toronto: hotel pickup, a licensed guide, time to eat and see the lights. $585 flat for the vehicle, up to 5 people.

The best time to go up
Late afternoon into dusk. You get daylight, then the nightly falls illumination. From 1 November to 31 December the lights start around 4:30 pm, which means a 5 pm dinner or deck visit in late autumn puts you right at the changeover. (Times are Niagara Parks’ own, approximate, and shift with dusk.) From 14 November 2026 the Winter Festival of Lights adds displays across the area, which makes the view from up there much busier and prettier.
Avoid fog, low cloud and hazy days. The deck cannot sell you a view the weather has taken away, so check the forecast the morning of, and ask Skylon whether they allow changes if the day goes grey.
Tower vs the free views
The free view from Queen Victoria Park, along the gorge rim by the Horseshoe, is closer, louder and, for many people, more moving than the tower. There is also Table Rock and the promenade, and no ticket. Our best Niagara Falls attractions guide ranks where each fits. The honest order is: free views first, then decide whether you want the altitude on top.
The tower stands on Robinson Street, up the hill from the falls, so it is a short drive or a hilly walk rather than a stroll along the rail. If anyone in your group has limited mobility, call before you go: Skylon’s site states a commitment to Ontario’s accessibility standards but does not publish specifics, so confirm on 1-800-410-4232.
Before you buy: a short checklist
- Check the price and hours on skylon.com. Third-party sites often carry last season’s numbers.
- Compare combo passes honestly. Skylon sells packages that add a theatre and other attractions. They only pay off if you would genuinely do all of it, so decide that before you are standing at the till.
- Look at the forecast the same morning. Clear and cold is better than warm and hazy.
- Book a window table if you are dining, and tell them if it is an occasion. Weekend tables near sunset go first.
- Plan parking or pickup. Central Niagara parking is paid and weekends fill up, which is one reason a driver and pickup suit an evening here.
A sample evening
Arrive at the falls an hour or so before sunset and take the free view from Queen Victoria Park first, so you know what you are looking down on later. Move up to the tower for an early dinner, which covers the decks and the elevator ride, and time your table so the lights come on while you are in the room. Finish on the rail at Table Rock if you still have energy, then head home. The whole thing needs about three hours at the falls, which leaves the drive back to Toronto comfortably before midnight.
Our verdict
- First visit, clear dusk, you like views: yes, ideally with an early dinner.
- Tight day, grey sky: skip it and spend the time at the falls.
- Winter evening: a strong choice, because the lights start early and you stay warm.
If you want it folded into a day without parking or planning, our private Niagara Falls tour runs about 130 km from Toronto each way, with pickup at your hotel. Check availability.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Skylon Tower worth it?
For most first-timers, yes at dusk and no at midday. The tower gives you the whole panorama, falls, river and city, from 775 feet, and that is hard to get any other way. But the closest and most powerful view of the falls is free at ground level, so go up for the context and the lights, not instead of the falls.
How much does the Skylon Tower cost?
Skylon does not publish admission prices on its main site, so we do not quote one. Check current prices and combo passes at skylon.com or call 1-800-410-4232. Anything you read on a third-party page may be a season old.
How high is the Skylon Tower and how long is the ride up?
The observation level is 775 feet above the falls, reached in 52 seconds by the glass-enclosed Yellow Bug elevators. Skylon says that on a clear day visibility is up to 125 km (80 miles).
Does a dining reservation include the observation deck?
According to Skylon, yes: every dining reservation includes access to the indoor and outdoor observation decks and the elevator ride. The revolving dining room turns 360 degrees every hour, and Skylon advertises early dinner specials daily at 4:30 and 5:00 pm.
What is the best time to go up the Skylon Tower?
Late afternoon into dusk. You see the falls in daylight, then the nightly illumination starts: from 1 November to 31 December the lights come on around 4:30 pm, and the Winter Festival of Lights runs 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. Pick a clear evening, because fog and low cloud can swallow the view completely.
Is the Skylon Tower open in winter?
We found no published winter closure, but Skylon does not list seasonal hours on its main page, so check skylon.com or call 1-800-410-4232 before you go. The Summit Suite buffet is the seasonal part, typically May to October.
