Niagara Falls Weekend Getaway from Toronto: 2-Day Plan

July 13, 2026·7 min read

A day trip to Niagara Falls is great. A weekend is better. Two days lets you slow down — do the boat cruise without rushing, catch the 10 PM fireworks you always miss on a day trip, sleep properly, and spend Sunday morning in Niagara-on-the-Lake wine country before an easy drive home. Here's the plan we'd actually give a couple or a group looking for a genuine weekend escape, not a highlight reel.

If you want the detailed hour-by-hour itinerary without the overnight angle, check our Niagara Falls 2-day itinerary — it runs tighter and covers more ground. This post is for people who want to actually unwind.

When to go — and how to dodge the QEW

The QEW between Toronto and Niagara Falls is the main headache of any weekend trip. Friday afternoon traffic from the city builds from 4 PM onward and can add 45–60 minutes to your drive. Two clean windows exist: leave Friday after 7 PM (relaxed drive, arrive in time for dinner and a walk along the falls), or leave Saturday by 9 AM before the leisure traffic kicks in.

The return leg is worse. Sunday afternoons on the QEW back up from the St. Catharines exit all the way toward Mississauga by 4 PM. Leave Niagara by 2:30–3 PM at the latest for a painless drive. This is not a suggestion — it's the one timing call that makes or breaks the weekend.

Day 1 — Arrive, falls, cruise, dinner, fireworks

9:00 AMLeave Toronto. QEW west. 90 minutes in clear conditions.
10:30 AMWalk Table Rock. No ticket needed — just park and walk to the edge of Horseshoe Falls. The mist hits you within 20 metres. This is the real welcome.
11:30 AMNiagara City Cruise. Pre-booked tickets ($55 adult / $35 child CAD). The 11:30 sailing is calmer than the 2 PM peak. You will get wet — ponchos provided.
1:00 PMLunch. Avoid Clifton Hill restaurants unless you enjoy paying tourist prices for mediocre food. A short walk or drive finds you better options — ask your hotel or us.
2:30 PMCheck in. Drop bags. Walk the Niagara Parkway south toward the whirlpool if you have energy, or just sit on a patio and take in the gorge.
3:30 PMJourney Behind the Falls (~$25 CAD adult). Tunnels lead you behind the curtain of Horseshoe Falls — the lower observation deck puts you inside the mist. Better in the afternoon light than the morning crowd.
7:00 PMDinner reservation. Book ahead — a Saturday night without a reservation means waiting.
10:00 PMFireworks over Horseshoe Falls. Nightly through October. Position at Table Rock or the upper Parkway. This is the version of Niagara Falls most day-trippers never see.

Where to stay — Fallsview hotel vs. NOTL B&B

This is the most common question, and there's no wrong answer — just a different trip.

OptionTypical cost/nightBest forTrade-off
Fallsview hotel (Niagara Falls)$250–$350 CADCouples wanting the full falls experience, fireworks from the roomBusy, loud on weekends; parking expensive; views cost a premium
NOTL B&B (Niagara-on-the-Lake)$150–$220 CADWine lovers, quiet nights, slower pace, good breakfast included20 min drive to falls; miss fireworks unless you drive back

Our recommendation: if the falls and fireworks are the draw, stay on the Fallsview strip. If you want the getaway to feel like an actual escape — wine, heritage buildings, a quiet main street — stay in NOTL and drive to the falls on Day 1 evening. The NOTL winery scene is genuinely one of Ontario's best, and a B&B breakfast beats a hotel buffet every time.

Want Niagara handled for you — no planning, no driving?

Private SUV tour from Toronto: GTA hotel & Airbnb pickup, licensed guide, your schedule. $650 flat for up to 5 (about $130 each).

Day 2 — Wine country or a slower morning at the falls

Sleep in. This is the whole point of a weekend. Checkout is usually 11 AM — use the morning.

If you're in NOTL: Walk Queen Street for coffee and a pastry, then hit one or two wineries before noon. Tastings open at 10 or 11 AM; a patio flight before lunch on a Sunday is one of those experiences that holds up. See our guide to NOTL wineries for the ones worth the detour.

If you're falls-side: Do what you skipped yesterday — White Water Walk, Whirlpool Gorge Lookout, or just another slow walk along the Parkway without the evening crowds. The Niagara Gorge in the morning is quieter and worth it.

Lunch is the anchor of Day 2. A patio in NOTL or a winery restaurant is the move. Budget $50–$80 for two with a glass of local wine. Then get on the QEW by 2:30 PM.

Budget for the weekend

Hotel (1 night): $150–$350 CAD
Niagara City Cruise (×2): ~$110 CAD
Journey Behind the Falls (×2): ~$50 CAD
Meals (Sat dinner + Sun lunch): $120–$180 CAD
Fuel (Toronto return): $30–$50 CAD
Winery tastings: $30–$60 CAD
Weekend total for two: $490–$800 CAD depending on hotel choice and how many attractions you add

If you want Day 1 handled — pickup in Toronto, licensed guide, all the driving and parking sorted — our private Niagara Falls tour runs $650 flat for up to 5 people. That covers the whole day: hotel pickup, guide, and all driving. You bring the cruise and attraction tickets separately. On a weekend with 4–5 people it's often cheaper than renting a car, parking twice, and navigating on your own.

For a longer trip, the Niagara Falls 3-day itinerary adds more time in wine country and covers the American side.

What to book before you leave Toronto

  • Niagara City Cruise — book online a week ahead on summer weekends; same-day tickets exist but the line is long
  • Your hotel room — Fallsview rooms with a falls view sell out weeks ahead in July and August; book the moment you commit to the weekend
  • Saturday dinner — call or book online at least 3–4 days ahead; the better restaurants fill by Thursday
  • Private tour (if you want Day 1 guided)book your tour here with at least 48 hours notice

FAQ

How far is Niagara Falls from Toronto for a weekend trip?

About 130 km — roughly 90 minutes on the QEW with light traffic. On a Friday evening or Saturday morning the drive can stretch to 2 hours. Leaving Toronto before 9 AM Saturday or after 7 PM Friday keeps you clear of the worst of it.

Where should you stay for a Niagara Falls weekend getaway?

Two good options: a Fallsview hotel puts you steps from the falls and fireworks but costs more ($250–$350/night) and the area is busy. A Niagara-on-the-Lake B&B is quieter, often cheaper ($150–$220/night), and puts you 20 minutes north in wine country — ideal if Day 2 is winery-focused. Either works; it comes down to whether you want the falls or the vineyards outside your window.

Is a Niagara Falls weekend getaway worth it from Toronto?

Yes — two days is the right amount of time. One day is enough for the falls themselves, but you miss the evening fireworks, the slower morning, and the wine country. A weekend removes the rush and lets you do the boat cruise, a proper dinner, and NOTL without feeling squeezed.

How much does a Niagara Falls weekend getaway cost from Toronto?

Budget roughly $600–$1,100 CAD for two people: hotel $150–$350, meals $120–$200, Niagara City Cruise $110 for two adults, one or two attraction tickets ($50–$110), and fuel or transport. A private guided day tour on Day 1 runs $650 flat for the whole vehicle (up to 5 passengers), which can actually save money versus renting a car and parking.

What should you book in advance for a Niagara Falls weekend?

The Niagara City Cruise sells out on summer weekends — book at least a few days ahead. Your hotel (especially Fallsview rooms with falls views) books up weeks out in July and August. Restaurants on the falls side fill on Friday and Saturday nights. Everything else — Journey Behind the Falls, Skylon, Whirlpool — can usually be booked same-day, but early arrival saves a queue.
