Niagara Falls lit in colour at night

Niagara Falls is lit in colour every night of the year, free to watch, from around dusk until 1 or 2 am. From 1 November to 31 December the lights start about 4:30 pm, which is the earliest start of the year, so a late-autumn visit gets you the lit falls without a late night.

Times below come from Niagara Parks (checked October 2026), who call them approximate and subject to light conditions. The evening version of the falls is a different place from the daytime one: quieter, colourful and a lot more atmospheric.

Where to watch

  • Queen Victoria Park rail. The classic: the parapet wall or the grassy area facing the Horseshoe. Free, and the rail is the best spot for photos.
  • Table Rock. Closest to the water, and the loudest. Wipe your lens often, because the mist reaches you.
  • Journey Behind the Falls terrace and the Queen Victoria Place Restaurant terrace. Both are named by Niagara Parks as viewing spots.
  • From above. The Skylon Tower or a Fallsview hotel room gives you the whole lit-up scene. Our photo spots guide covers where to put a tripod.

See the falls lit, skip the late drive

Private SUV from Toronto, hotel or Airbnb pickup anywhere in the GTA, licensed guide, time for dinner and the lights. $650 flat for up to 5.

Fireworks and the Festival of Lights

The nightly fireworks run at 10:00 pm from 15 May to 12 October 2026, so that series has finished for the year. The full summer story is in Niagara Falls fireworks. The Winter Festival of Lights has its own, shorter fireworks schedule. Coming up next is the Winter Festival of Lights, 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. If you can pick the date, go once it starts and you get the falls and the displays together.

A simple evening plan

Start with an early dinner, not a late one. Restaurants close to the falls fill up around 6 to 8 pm on weekends, and a table booked in advance saves you a long wait in the cold. Walk to the rail once the lights are on, give yourself twenty or thirty minutes at Queen Victoria Park, then move to Table Rock for the closer, wetter view. By then most people are ready for something warm, and the walk back to the car is easier before the late crowd arrives.

In late autumn the lights start before most people have finished their afternoon, so you can see the falls in daylight, watch the colour come in, and still be on the road home before it is late. That is the main reason the autumn and early winter schedule suits a day trip from Toronto better than summer, when the lights do not start until about 8:30 pm and the evening runs long.

Photographing the falls at night

A phone on night mode works better than people expect, as long as you hold it still against the rail. For a camera, use a tripod or brace the camera on the wall, a slow shutter to smooth the water, and low ISO. Wipe the lens between shots because spray lands on it constantly. Expect the colours to change through the evening, so give it a few minutes before you decide you have the shot.

Safety and comfort after dark

  • The main area is busy and well lit. Stay on lit paths and near other people.
  • Stay behind the railings. In cold weather the spray freezes on surfaces and the paving by the rail becomes slippery.
  • Dress for colder than the forecast. The gorge is windy and the mist makes it feel colder, so bring a hat, gloves and boots with grip.
  • Leave valuables out of view in a parked car, or do not bring them.
  • Book dinner before you go. Sit-down tables near the falls fill early on weekends.

Getting back to Toronto

Toronto is about 130 km from the falls, roughly 90 minutes on a clear road, and the QEW is much quieter after about 8 pm than at rush hour. The risk is winter weather, not traffic: lake-effect snow can close lanes or slow the drive down. Check conditions before you leave and be willing to head back earlier. Our Toronto to Niagara drive guide covers the route.

Not wanting to drive it yourself is the main reason people book our private Niagara Falls tour for an evening: pickup at your hotel, the lit falls at your pace, and a licensed guide at the wheel for the ride back. Check availability.

Frequently asked questions

What time are the Niagara Falls lit up at night?

The illumination runs every night of the year, starting around dusk. From 1 November to 31 December Niagara Parks lists 4:30 pm to 2:00 am. In summer it starts around 8:30 pm and always ends at 2:00 am, or 1:00 am in January and February. Times are approximate and move with the light. Checked October 2026.

Is there a charge to see the falls at night?

No. The illumination is viewed free from Queen Victoria Park and the surrounding promenade. You pay only for parking, food, or an attraction you choose to add.

Are there fireworks at Niagara Falls at night?

Nightly fireworks at 10:00 pm run in the warmer months only, 15 May to 12 October 2026 this year, so the summer series is over. The coloured illumination continues all year, and the Winter Festival of Lights starts 14 November 2026 with its own fireworks at 8:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays from 14 November to 12 December, nightly from 18 December to 2 January, and Friday 8 and Saturday 9 January.

Is it safe to visit Niagara Falls at night?

The main falls area is busy, well lit in the evening, and most visitors have a trouble-free night. Use ordinary city sense: stay on lit paths, keep behind the railings (the spray makes surfaces icy in winter), keep valuables out of sight in a parked car, and leave anything isolated for the daytime.

How late can I stay and still get back to Toronto?

Toronto is about 130 km away, roughly 90 minutes on a clear road. The lights run until 1 or 2 am, but most people leave between 8 and 10 pm. In winter, check the QEW conditions before you set off, since lake-effect snow can slow the drive home considerably.

What is the best spot to watch the falls lit up?

Queen Victoria Park, along the rail or the grassy area facing the Horseshoe Falls, is the classic. The Journey Behind the Falls terrace and the outdoor terrace at the Queen Victoria Place Restaurant are named by Niagara Parks as good viewing spots, and the Skylon Tower or a Fallsview hotel room gives you the view from above.
