Niagara City Cruise vs Maid of the Mist: Are They the Same?

July 5, 2026·7 min read

Same falls. Different boats. Different countries. This is the single most common confusion we field from first-time visitors — and it is an easy one to clear up before you accidentally book the wrong experience or end up at a border crossing you did not plan for.

The short answer: same falls, different boats

Niagara City Cruises and Maid of the Mist are two entirely separate boat tour companies operating out of two different countries. They both take passengers to the base of Horseshoe Falls, they both hand out blue ponchos, and they both produce the kind of soaking, close-up view of the falls that photos cannot do justice to. But everything else — the dock, the boat type, the price currency, and whether you need a passport — is different.

If you are coming to Niagara Falls from Toronto on a day trip, you are almost certainly doing Niagara City Cruises. That is the Canadian-side boat. Maid of the Mist is the American-side boat, departing from Niagara Falls State Park in New York. Getting there from Toronto requires crossing the Rainbow Bridge into the United States, which adds at minimum 30–60 minutes of border time each way, plus a valid passport.

Niagara City Cruises — the Canadian-side boat

Niagara City Cruises (previously called Hornblower Niagara Cruises before the rebrand) operates large, modern catamarans from a dock near Table Rock, right at the edge of Horseshoe Falls on the Ontario side. The boats hold around 700 passengers and are wide and stable — a meaningful difference when you are fighting mist, wind, and a crowd of people all angling for the bow rail.

The departure point is the closest you can get to Horseshoe Falls by land, which means the boat reaches the base of the Canadian Horseshoe within minutes of leaving the dock. The ride lasts about 20 minutes. Adult tickets run approximately $35 CAD in 2026. Boats depart every 15 minutes at peak times from late May through October, so lineups are manageable if you time it right. Our full boat cruise guide covers current pricing, how to skip the queue, and what to wear.

Blue ponchos are provided. Expect to get wet — not just damp, wet. The closer you are to the bow and the falls, the wetter you get. Cameras need a case or a dry bag. Your shoes will not dry by dinner.

Maid of the Mist — the American-side boat

Maid of the Mist is the older and arguably more famous brand — it has been operating since 1846, which makes it one of the oldest tourist attractions in North America. The boats are double-deck ferries, smaller and more traditional than the Niagara City Cruises catamarans, holding around 600 passengers. They depart from Niagara Falls State Park on the New York side.

Tickets are priced in USD — approximately $30 USD per adult in 2026 (roughly $41 CAD at current exchange). The boats also hand out blue ponchos and take you to the base of Horseshoe Falls, but they approach from the American side and cross the river to reach it, which gives you a slightly different angle. Visually, the difference between the two rides is small. The logistics difference is large.

To board Maid of the Mist from the Canadian side, you must walk across the Rainbow Bridge into the US ($1 USD toll), clear US customs, and then re-enter Canada on the way back. If you are visiting from the American side, Maid of the Mist is the obvious choice — no border hassle involved. If you are coming from Toronto, it is not.

Which one gets closer to Horseshoe Falls?

Niagara City Cruises gets the edge here because it departs from a dock on the Canadian side — the same side as Horseshoe Falls. The boat is already facing the falls when it leaves the dock, and within a few minutes you are directly beneath the curtain of water. The Maid of the Mist has to cross from the American side to reach the same spot, approaching at a different angle. The experiential difference is marginal. Both rides are loud, wet, and impressive. But if "closest to the falls" is your metric, the Canadian boat wins slightly.

What matters more is where you are coming from. The falls are bigger and more dramatic from the Canadian side in general — the view from Table Rock is the iconic one. This comparison gets into why the Canadian side is the better base for a full day visit.

What about crossing the border?

If you want to do both boats or are considering crossing for Maid of the Mist, know what you are getting into. The Rainbow Bridge pedestrian crossing can back up 45–90 minutes in summer, particularly on weekends and holidays. US Customs requires a valid passport or NEXUS card for Canadians and most international visitors. Some travel visa holders may need additional documentation to re-enter the US or Canada.

On a typical Toronto day trip, adding a US border crossing burns 2–3 hours of a 10-hour day. That is time you could spend at Journey Behind the Falls, the Whirlpool Aero Car, or a wine country stop on the way home. The border crossing for Maid of the Mist is only worth it if you are already spending time on the US side — for example, if you drove from Buffalo or are doing a multi-day trip that includes Niagara Falls State Park.

The verdict: which one should you book?

Coming from Toronto or anywhere in Ontario? Book Niagara City Cruises. It is the Canadian-side boat, no passport needed, priced in CAD, and the dock is a 2-minute walk from Table Rock — which is the main viewpoint you will be visiting anyway. It is also the boat included when local operators (us included) incorporate the cruise into a full-day Niagara tour.

Coming from New York, Buffalo, or the US side? Maid of the Mist is the obvious choice — it is right there in the State Park and there is no reason to cross the border just for the boat. The ride is comparable and the American side has its own set of strong viewpoints.

Both rides are worth doing at least once. The falls at the base are unlike anything you see from the top — the noise and the spray put the scale in your body, not just your eyes. But for a Toronto day-trip, the full breakdown of what the Niagara City Cruise is actually like — including the best time to board and what to bring — is your next read.

FAQ

Is Niagara City Cruises the same as Maid of the Mist?

No — they are two separate boat tours run by different companies in different countries. Niagara City Cruises departs from the Canadian side (Niagara Falls, Ontario) and operates large Hornblower-style catamarans. Maid of the Mist departs from Niagara Falls State Park in New York. Both take you close to the base of Horseshoe Falls, both hand out blue ponchos, but the boats, the docks, the currency, and the country are all different.

Which boat gets closer to Horseshoe Falls?

Niagara City Cruises edges slightly closer because it departs from the Canadian side, directly beneath Horseshoe Falls. The Maid of the Mist approaches from the American side and must cross the river to reach the base of Horseshoe, which means it arrives at a slightly different angle. The difference is minor — both rides are dramatic — but if you want the Canadian horseshoe vantage point, go with Niagara City Cruises.

Do I need a passport for Maid of the Mist?

Yes. Maid of the Mist departs from Niagara Falls, New York, which requires entering the United States. Canadian and international visitors need a valid passport (or NEXUS card) to cross at the Rainbow Bridge and return to Canada. If you are on a tour from Toronto, your guide will be operating on the Canadian side, so you will be boarding Niagara City Cruises — no US border crossing required.

How much does Niagara City Cruises cost in 2026?

Adult tickets for Niagara City Cruises run approximately $35 CAD (2026 pricing). Maid of the Mist tickets are approximately $30 USD per adult — which at current exchange rates works out to roughly $41 CAD. See our full boat cruise guide for the current breakdown and how to skip the ticket line.

Can I do both boat tours in one day?

Technically yes, but it requires a US border crossing — factor in 30–60 minutes at the Rainbow Bridge each way, passport validity, and US visitor status. For most Toronto day-trippers it is not worth doubling the logistics. Niagara City Cruises on the Canadian side covers the main Horseshoe Falls vantage point and takes about 20 minutes on the water. That is the one to book if you are coming from Toronto or staying on the Ontario side.
